This multi-residential/healthcare project for Woking and Sam Beare Hospices involves the refurbishment and extension of a three-storey 1970s office block into a clinical facility which will incorporate 20 in-patient en-suite bedrooms – each with balconies – an art and social area, a physiotherapy gym and counselling rooms.

On this scheme, XCO2 are the sustainability consultants and BREEAM assessors, being involved in the project from planning through to completion. This hospice will provide palliative and end-of-life care and support for patients and their families and had an ambition to achieve a good level of sustainable design from the outset. Features such as recycled and responsibly sourced materials, excellent levels of sound insulation between in-patient bedrooms, improved levels of thermal insulation, energy efficient equipment, enhancing site ecology, cycle storage and cyclist facilities have been incorporated..

Goldsworth House Hospice has recently received its BREEAM Design Stage certification and is progressing with its Post Construction Assessment. As a project aiming for a high level of sustainable design whilst delivering a space with the very specific needs of a hospice, our early involvement as sustainability consultants and BREEAM assessors was key. This allowed us to ascertain, at an early stage, where certain BREEAM criteria may conflict with the requirements of the hospice, determine any cost implications and provide guidance to the design team on how to achieve this in an efficient and cost effective manner. Our regular involvement in team meetings and individual workshops kept both the design team aware of all the credit requirements and any implications of design changes to the credits that could be achieved.
