XCO2 Energy’s project in Whittington Park, Islington brings together a selection of low and zero carbon technologies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions for a bespoke building type: Whittington Park’s own community shower and changing facilities, contained within a bright and naturally warm timber pavilion. The building is home to Islington Greenspace and Leisure who make use of the office and meeting facilities within the building. The project was delivered as a joint venture between Islington Greenspace and Leisure and the Football Foundation as a test bed for carbon reduction design techniques and technology.

By combining high thermal efficiency fabric insulation, high spec glazing and LZC technologies, the cross laminated timber (CLT) panel building provides an 80% CO2 improvement over 2006 building regulations.

The building features solar thermal panels, a biomass boiler, green roof, efficient lighting and appliances, and the first installation in the UK of a wastewater heat recovery system.

In 2012, the building was shortlisted and runner-up in the CIBSE Building Performance Awards.

Other members of the team include, Architects Network, Conisbee Structural Engineers and the cross laminate timber package provided by Eurban.
