XCO2 were appointed to provide M&E design and environmental consultancy to support the development of this new community nursery. Located in Lancaster West Estate, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Grenfell Nursery comprises the refurbishment and single-storey extension of the Ilys Brooker Centre, to provide ancillary spaces and 3 new playrooms; under 2s, 2-3 years and 3 years. Each playroom has been designed with direct access to nature; a learning courtyard, an outdoor garden, and a secure roof terrace. The surrounding area is predominantly dense with residential buildings and is in close proximity to Grenfell Tower.
The sustainability strategy for the scheme at Grenfell Nursery has been developed in line with the relevant policies of the London Plan and of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s Local Plan and aims at the efficient management of resources, environmental protection and the effective adaptation and mitigation of the development to climate change. The energy strategy has been developed in line with the three-step Energy Hierarchy and the cumulative CO2 savings on-site are estimated at 34.7% against a Part L 2013 compliant scheme.
