Heathlands School in St Albans, Hertfordshire, is the UK’s largest school for deaf children and young people. The new six-classroom extension creates a purpose-built learning environment that prioritises accessibility and inclusivity. Designed to support the unique needs of the students, the building optimises natural light while minimising glare, and ensures clear sightlines for effective communication.
XCO2 provided MEP services for this energy-efficient extension, incorporating a thermally efficient building fabric, PV panels, and air source heat pumps. Natural ventilation with heat recovery units were integrated to enhance indoor air quality and energy performance. We also demonstrated that the extension could connect to the school’s existing heating system, reducing both capital and maintenance costs.
To ensure a fully integrated solution, the extension seamlessly connects with the school’s existing water, fire alarm, door access, and PA systems, supporting a cohesive and future-proofed learning environment.
The project was shortlisted for RIBAJ’s MacEwen Award in 2025.
