This industrial and office project for Costa Coffee houses the company’s new, purposely-built coffee roasting facilities, which will provide beans to all of its 3,000 cafes in 31 countries.
On this scheme, XCO2 are the sustainability consultants and BREEAM assessors, working closely to the design team from planning stage through to completion to ensure that the environmental strategy employed on this development went beyond best practices to ensure an exceptionally sustainable building.
The building’s BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, a first for a coffee roasting facility, was achieved through features such as low embodied materials, excellent levels of sound insulation to all office areas, good levels of thermal insulation, efficient appliances, rainwater harvesting, extensive array of solar thermal and photovoltaic panels, electric car charging points, cycle storage and cyclist facilities.
XCO2’s early involvement as sustainability consultants and BREEAM assessors was key in order to determine all appropriate and feasible credits, determine any cost impacts and give guidance to the design team on how to achieve this in an efficient and cost effective manner.
